    Description:
The electoral process is paramount in any democracy, and the example of the last elections in the USA can only leave us pondering on the effect of the electoral process on the outcome of the elections, and therefore on the leadership of the country.

    Potential solutions:
Scrutinizing of profile of candidates is mandatory prior to submission of candidatures. Organising of debates on pertinent issues relating to the society to allow citizens to make assessment as appropriate of potential candidates.

A review of the current configuration of the electoral boundaries in Mauritius is mandatory.

Similarly, the system of financing elections should not be underestimated. The Bill on the financing of political parties was a welcoming element in the government’s program.

    Benefits:
    More transparency, accountability, good governance
