Every time we start talking about sex education, a section of the population seems to think that this will encourage kids to be promiscuous. WRONG! Teenagers will be promiscuous because they are curious and want to explore.
The role of sexual education is to allow the growing child to make more informed decision as a young adult. It should help to raise awareness about STD (not just AIDS, but also piles, chlamydia, gonorrhea), being aware of their body and health and how to detect the early onset of some diseases such as breast cancer. It should also help to empower young people in understanding than being in “love” does not mean that you have to say yes to everything. Even though you care for a person, it is okay to say no if you are not comfortable with doing certain things with your partner. What are the different methods one can use to prevent unwanted pregnancy? Does not being a virgin mean that my life is ruined or that I am a girl with a loose character? Is it okay for a boy to want to wait until he is married to lose his virginity? Is it okay to feel attracted to members of the same sex or both sex? These are some of the questions that a sex education curriculum should aim to answer.
Ideally it should have been the parents’ role and fingers crossed one day parents will not shy away from this very important topic. In the meantime, NGOs as well as the Govt. should fill the gap. Better to have the upcoming generation to have a proper sexual education rather than learning it from movies, magazines, hearsay or pornography.+1August 10, 2020 at 1:41 am #48181myrtleuy11
