Giving back to society and to others is vital for positive youth development and for the society at large. Volunteering is a great way to make a difference in our community, discover a new interest, explore a possible career, network with new mentors, make friends and have fun.
Mauritius provides free education from pre-primary to tertiary level and literacy rate is high. However during the educational cycle, students are not provided with the opportunities to engage themselves in community service.

It is being proposed that youth between 17-25 years are required to engage in community work for a cumulative period of 6 months . All the stakeholders of the Mauritian society can help our youth become part of a new generation of young people prepared to take responsibility, lead others, and tackle tomorrow’s social and environmental challenges

When the youth learn to improve their communities, they can understand how they fit into society : they acquire problem-solving, planning, organizational and leadership skills, time management, that help them to take more active and positive roles in their communities and become active citizen. They can help solve societal problems. Often, these experiences push them out of their comfort zones to see the world in new ways.
Experiences that involve teamwork, collaboration, and interaction are training grounds for future organized citizens, people who set goals, work within established systems, and motivate others to help.
