    Mohammad Ali Zeadally

Members of the police force and fire fighters are bound to work on Saturday, public holidays or at any odd time if their services and required. We have witnessed same during the recent torrential rain which lasted for days and weeks where members of the force have been requested to work for days non-stop. This is also the case during cyclone warning class III and IV period and other natural calamities. We have to pay homage to these officers who have to spare their lives for the population the more so during “emmeute”. It is a tragedy that during these difficult situations the officers have to work without food and drink. We have to put ourselves in their shoes. To take as example, an officer who on sentry guarding a bridge or other strategic places during an emmeute for an indefinite period. Those cannot work with an empty belly for days and weeks without food and drink. The Police Association is crying that this is a gross injustice against members of the forces.

To circumvent the said problems, I am of opinion that the SMF should be equipped with a modern bakery and a special unit to distribute food to members of our forces and to fire fighters who are requested to work in difficult situations such as natural calamities and emmeute. We should not forget about the difficult situation in which members of the force have been working without food and drink for days to protect our citizens in the “emmeute” of Feb 99.

The Germans who have lost the Second World War because of “Ravitaillement” could be used as a lesson. “Mieux vaux tard que jamais”.
