The world economy is now in a Keynesian phase where the government is assuming a central role in the economy. Inequality of income has been increasing both in Mauritius and worldwide over the past two decades. Now is the time to adopt social policies that will benefit the majority.
While the introduction of a negative income tax is a good start we need to think further down the road with the possibility of gradually introducing a universal basic income in Mauritius.
This will first and foremost empower the most vulnerable segments of the society.
